Shifting gears, here we go again!

From coast to coast we have recently experienced a number of legislative and regulatory changes, not all of them are related to COVID 19.. Here is a round up to help you all shift gears for the season ahead:

British Columbia- The Provincial State of Emergency for COVID 19 is scheduled to end on October 13, 2020. This means that dealerships in the province need to be mindful of any extensions that may occur as well as the advancement to standardized operations that may stem from no extension.

Alberta- Albertans are able to obtain their test results via text message in addition to the various ways test results were previously obtained. This means reduced turn around times for staff that have been required to go for testing. Additionally, there are 2 types of tests available in Alberta, the swab to look for the virus and a blood test to look for antibodies.

Saskatchewan- On October 1, 2020 the minimum wage increased to $11.45/hour. Be sure that you have applies the new rate to any applicable staff before finalizing your first October payroll.

Manitoba- Those dealerships operating in Manitoba should be aware that the minimum wage ahs also increased here. The new minimum wage is $11.90 per hour effective October 1st. Please ensure that you have implemented the change before finalizing your first October payroll. Many jurisdictions in Manitoba have also implemented a mandatory mask program that may apply to your dealership. Check your local requirements.

Ontario- In addition to the new staff screening protocols, Ontario also increased their minimum wage effective October 1, 2020. The new wage rate is $14.25 per hour.

Quebec- Many areas of Quebec have had zone designation changes recently. This may impact the protocols required of your dealership. Additionally, pockets of outbreaks may begin to impact staff attendance particularly where there is a connection to the education system.

Maritimes- Newfoundland has increased their minimum wage to $12.15 as of October 1, 2020. The "Atlantic Bubble" remains in effect.

Yukon and the Territories- Yukon is in the process of amending the Environment Act regarding single use bags. Although not commonly unused by dealerships, you should be aware of the requirements of retailers and how they may pertain to packaging for sales documents, parts departments and Manufacturer's clothing, gifts, etc.

Coast to Coast- As we near the Thanksgiving season, there are many jurisdictions recommending alterations to holiday celebrations. Be sure that you and your staff are aware of the rules in your area and that their compliance and adherence to the rules, even on their personal time, can have an impact on the dealership.
